Up, up and away

“Up w/ Chris Hayes focuses on politics including the day's top headlines, newsmaker interviews, and panels of pundits, politicos and voices from outside the mainstream.”  http://upwithchrishayes.msnbc.msn.com/

I think Up is the smartest show on television – and I make a point of getting out of bed early to see it: Saturdays from 7:00 AM – 9:00 AM ET (5:00 AM Tucson time) and Sundays from 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM ET (6:00 AM Tucson time).

It struck me today that the conversation is changing. In addition to relating the facts surrounding a particular story, there were more comments about ethics and morals – hard choices and their implications - than I have ever heard before. Maybe it was due to the topics: Komen and Planned Parenthood, Iran and Israel’s standoff over Iran’s nuclear weapons program, Syria’s attacks against its own citizens, Mitt Romney’s speech after Nevada’s caucuses and the Obama administration’s mandate for most health insurance plans to cover the costs of contraception.

When Chris brought up each of these topics, a respectful conversation ensued about the rights of women to access health care, the right to live in peace and the right to free speech; the morality of placing bombs under cars vs. killing people with drones; and the struggle for the moral soul of America.

I appreciate going beyond the news and hearing a discussion about all aspects of an issue, and hope the show’s format continues in this vein – no yelling, no talking over each other, just listening, sharing and getting behind the headlines and the first two paragraphs of a story – and making the viewer think.

Check it out – don't worry if you can't get up early on the weekend - full episodes are online!
